So… sofa or sectional?

So… sofa or sectional? - El Workshop

This is one of those decisions that seems simple until you actually have to make it. And then suddenly it defines your whole living room.

When we work on projects across Spain, Portugal, and Netherlands, this is always one of the first questions we solve. Not because of style, but because it changes how the space is used every single day.

So instead of overcomplicating it, let’s break it down in a way that actually helps you decide.

First thing I look at every time
I never start with the furniture. I start with the space.

If your layout is tighter, more linear, or you want the room to feel open, a sofa just makes more sense. It gives you breathing room. It does not take over the space.

If your layout is bigger or more open, a sectional can actually help you. It creates structure where there is none. It defines the living area without needing walls or extra pieces.

This is something we apply a lot in FF&E planning. The furniture is not filling the space. It is shaping it.

If you like changing things around, read this
A sofa gives you flexibility. And that matters more than people think.

You can move it. You can add chairs. You can completely change the vibe of the room without replacing the main piece.

For clients working with a contractor or developing spaces long term, this is usually the safer choice. Your layout can evolve with you.

It also feels a bit more intentional visually. You can create that curated look without everything feeling fixed in place.

If your home is more about hanging out than styling
Then a sectional might be your answer.

It is made for real life. For sitting, lying down, hosting, watching something, all at the same time.

You do not need to think about extra seating. It is all built in. And it naturally brings people together in a more relaxed way.

We see this a lot in Portugal projects or larger residential layouts where the goal is comfort first. Not formal structure.

Just keep in mind, once it is there, it stays there. It is not something you will want to move around often.

The part nobody tells you
This decision is not about what looks better. It is about how you actually use your space.

If you like things clean, adaptable, and a bit more designed, go for a sofa.

If your space is more about comfort, hosting, and using every seat possible, go for a sectional.

Both can look incredible. Both can work in high end projects. The difference is how they support your day to day.

What I would tell you if we were working together
I would ask you one thing.

What does a normal evening at home look like for you?

Because that answer will tell you everything you need to know.

At El Workshop, whether we are sourcing pieces or handling full FF&E across Spain, the Netherlands, or Portugal, every decision comes back to that. Making sure the space works for you, not the other way around.
